Specialist School Status

Following our unsuccessful bid in 2004, the combined status of Science and Sport proving too demanding for us, at that time (although Science remains a major player at The Harvey) we are now moving forward with a second bid in March 2005 to become a Sports College with Mathematics.

When successful this time, The Harvey will be officially designated as a Specialist School with effect from the 1st September 2005.

More news on this important bid will be published as soon as possible.

Henry Newington Memorial Seat

Friday, October 1. 2004

On Saturday the 18th September, the same day as the annual OHA/HGS soccer matches, a ceremony was held at 10.15 am on the playing field to dedicate the seat, attended by Henry Newington's widow, Gladys, and granddaughter Kim.

Alan Philpott, whose inspiration this project was, gave reminiscences on the life of Henry at the Harvey and the ceremony closed with a service of dedication given by the Reverend Anthony Buckley, Governor of the School.

A large number of Old Boys responded immediately and generously to the appeal for donations and Phil Harding was able to procure a magnificent seat with carved inscription.

Jim Dowie, our groundsman also made a generous contribution by creating a secure site in the North East corner of the School playing field. As the six teams of boys and Old Boys also participated, this made for a very moving and happy occasion, particularly for Mrs Newington and her family.

We are arranging for the seat to be on display in the School Hall at this year's Annual Dinner on the 4th December.
