2008 School Golf Championship

Tuesday, April 29. 2008

The 2008 School Golf Championship, sponsored by OHGS, was played at Sene Valley on April 3rd on a lovely sunny day. 19 boys played and the winner and Golf Champion for 2008 was Tom Hay (9 handicap) with the best Gross score of 78. The Runner up was Tom Bean.

The School team to play OHGS was chosen from the championship and the match OHGS v The School took place also at Sene Valley Golf Club on April 25th.

OHGS did have a pretty strong team and The School suffered from the loss last year of their star players Duncan Pike (1 handicap) and Luke Jennings ( 4 handicap) who are now at University.

OHGS had a convincing win 5 - 1
OHGS (Captain) Dick Young and John Denham won 5 & 1
Bob Chappell (Captain of Sene Valley) & Dave Green won 3 & 2
John Young and Tim Wren won 2 & 1
Geoff Cooke and Peter Thomas (both ex Harvey teachers) won2 & 1
Nick Hopkin and Simon Readman won 2 & 1
Greg Cowling and Gary Cochran were the only pair not to win.

Bill Green

Friday, February 1. 2008

It is with much sadness that I have to advise you all of the death on 25th January of William Green (Bill to everyone) .

Bill was one of the first members of the OHGS but gave up playing a few years ago. He played his golf at Sene Valley and then moved up to Etchinghill when it opened as it was in those days considered an easier option than Sene (that was before the top 9 holes were added).

I understand that the funeral will be at Barham Crematorium on 11th February but at this stage I do not know the time.

If any of you knew Bill it would be good to see him off with a good representation from OHGS and I hope to see some of you then.

OHA Outing 2007 - Royal Residences - 4th August 2006

Wednesday, February 7. 2007

The Diamond Wedding of The Queen and Prince Philip is to be celebrated with a special exhibition at Buckingham Palace which will include her wedding dress and the dresses of the bridesmaids and the wedding jewellery and presents itself as a perfect subject for our outing this year.

Tours of the State Rooms of Buckingham Palace and Clarence House have been booked for Saturday 4th August.

Starting at the Royal Mews at 10am, we'll visit the Queens Gallery, which this year is featuring The Royal collection of Italian paintings.

This will be followed by a 45 minute tour of Clarence House, before returning to Buckingham Palace for a tour of The State rooms including the Diamond Wedding exhibition.

The tour concludes by exiting at the rear of Buckingham Palace with a walk round the side of the gardens and out through the bottom wall.

It is only about a 2 / 300 yard walk to Victoria so very convenient for a meal at the same Italian restaurant that we went to last year, ll Posto Ristorante Italiano in Vauxhal Bridge Road .

The coach will pick us up from the restaurant at around 6.15 for the return journey home.

The day will cost £47.50 for the whole package , or £40 if people wish to leave out Clarence House. It easily works out that if you prefer to take longer over say a picnic lunch in St James Park, you can rejoin the rest of the group on their return from Clarence House.

The meal will be optional as well but it is a good opportunity to eat together and for the number involved they do cater very well and the food will be good Italian fare.

If you are interested in coming along, please contact John Oliver.

OHA Outing 2006

Friday, June 23. 2006

June 10th was a perfect English Summers day, sunny and hot. Our coach picked up at 7am to ensure an early arrival at The Churchill War Cabinet rooms at Whitehall at 9.40am. London was buzzing with the second rehearsal for The Trooping of the Colour going on in Horseguards Parade just by the entrance to The Churchill rooms. We did get a brief glimpse of the action as we came out of the rooms at around midday.
